I am now about 9 years into my second running "life" having, regrettably, had a break of many years.
Regrettably because I now struggle with my running (can't be age can it?) but still enjoy it - unless there is an ascent involved!.
Whilst my running has gone down hill (?) I hope that I might now be of service to the club in my role as Chairman and would further
hope that if any member needs help, advice or has any comments or ideas to put forward they will not hesitate to come and see me.
Now back for 2nd stint as Treasurer and custodian of our purse strings after time off for good behaviour, I'm also continuing in Welafre Officer role. A club member for many years, I particularly enjoy our club camaraderie on club training nights, our organized and scheduled cross training cycling groups and at run & triathlon events - and also more ad hoc events such as assault courses and pram races! I've taken part in cross country, all race distances up to marathon and triathlon middle distance events. A licenced Leader In Running Fitness by UK Athletics, also completed welfare, diversity, safeguarding & protection requirements.
I have been running for over 40 years during which time i have run for the Army and my County. My claims to fame includes, running Reading 10 Km 33 Min 22 Sec, Hong Kong Marathon 2 Hr 56 M, South Downs Way 80 Miles 19 Hr 23 Min and representing GB in Biathlon. Now i am getting slower by the day, so i enjoy passing some of my experience to the clubs Juniors. UKA Level 2 Endurance coach.
I did a lot of running when I was younger, including the London marathon twice. After a long break, the birth of my second child led me
to re-evaluate my life, and the fact that golf alone does not make you aerobically fit!. So my second running career started, and it has
not looked back since I joined Witham running club in 2010. I run mostly between 5k and half-marathons and Im looking forward to the
task of cajoling others to join me at these runs!
I am obviously the most novice and under qualified member of the committee at WRC but what I lack in experience and
training I make up for in personality and enthusiasm - Everyone loves a trier! I have my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, and
lots of swimming certificate though!
On a serious note, I only started running last year after entering a charity event 5K. I joined WRC late 2010 to help
build and improve my running further and to fit into a wedding dress! I quickly fell in love with the sport and the
social elements/friendship the club offered. Last year I entered many road races representing the club and even lost
my cross country virginity. Although I am new to running I hope I am proof that anyone can do it and more importantly
enjoy it. Whatever your reasons for starting running/joining WRC are here to encourage and support you all the way.
We are a friendly bunch.
I have been running over 30 years and although retired from competition still run for enjoyment and fitness.
I now coach endurance athletes from begineers to Club runners with my current squad targeting Spring Marathons.
"Hi, I've been a member of Witham running club since the summer of 2006. Initially I joined as a way of getting fit and loosing weight but found that the club was so friendly and encouraging that I wanted to get more and more involved. I'm not what I would call a typical runner but believe that anyone can run any distance. I now compete in races most weekends and have recently started attacking off road trail races. If I can do it any one can. "
I joined WRC after speaking to member and encouraged to do pub runs. I had not competed in races, but now I have done loads of races
and lots of distances including the Brighton Marathon. I was inspired and hope that I can play a part in doing the same.

I started out my sporting life as a racing cyclist during the 1980's competing in time trials and
road races but after a lay off for several years and finding I was putting on a few pounds decided
to take up running as it was less of a faff and joined Witham RC in 2004. My triathlon odyssey
started one night under severe alcoholic influence, when a mate convinced me that I should do an
Ironman triathlon (even though I couldn't swim!). I entered and, after 7 months of training
finished Ironman Switzerland. Shunning the shorter events, I have completed several Ironman
distance races since then and seeking a new challenge I am now finding my way in the murky world of
ultra running. Being a bit bonkers helps...
